Nagybakó is 22 km from Zalakaros.
Thanks to the sandstone bedrock, during wet weather we can admire the rare phenomenon of the ‘weeping wall’. The gorge’s microclimate provides the conditions necessary for species that are not typically found in the hills: liverwort, horse-tongue, bird’s-nest orchid, etc. Near the village lies the extremely interesting natural formation known as the Kőszikla Gorge, as well as the Árpád (Esperanto) springs, which are regarded as a pleasant place to rest.
On arriving in the valley of the springs, the spring on the left was originally known as the Árpád Spring, but following the work carried out to capture the springs, it and the spring on the right were renamed the Esperanto Springs. The springs were first given their names by the Scouts. For a long time, these springs remained forgotten and fell into disuse. In the late 1970s, the idea of developing the springs arose during a tourism survey, and thanks to the efforts of the Nagykanizsa Nature Lovers’ Association, two of the springs were developed. In this beautiful and, in summer, cool setting, the excellent-quality spring water provides a pleasant refreshment, and the seating provided there makes for a lovely rest. There is also a fire pit.
Lake Csibiti, Nagybakónak: a small, man-made lake.
As well as being a great place for a day out, it is also home to a few tortoises.
