Kányavári Island

Kányavári Island is a strictly protected area within Kis-Balaton. A road leads to the island, at the end of which there is a car park for visitors arriving by car. You reach the small island via a unique wooden bridge. On the island, the National Park Authority has created the Great Crested Grebe Nature Trail. The trail, comprising 15 stations, is approximately 1.5 km long and can be comfortably walked in an hour. The information boards provide an introduction to the birdlife of Kis-Balaton.

In the centre of the island there is a wooden birdwatching hide; the multi-storey observation tower has been rebuilt. Coming from the bridge, turn left in the clearing in front of the birdwatching hide and you’ll reach it after a few minutes’ walk. Further south, a brand-new playground awaits the little ones in an idyllic meadow. For those with a fishing licence, fishing is permitted along the road linking Újszabar and Zalavár, as well as in the immediate vicinity of Kányavári Island. The nature trails within the Balaton Uplands National Park can be visited all year round without a guided tour, including the Little Balaton landscape area and the Búbos Vöcsök nature trail on Kányavári Island.

The island is open to the public. A parking charge will apply from April 2022.

We ask all visitors to the island to comply fully with the current public health regulations.

How to get there: on the road linking Balatonmagyaród and Sármellék, a sign indicates the turn-off for Kányavári Island.
